What ROAS is good in ecommerce? The real answer (not the typical one)
There is no universal good ROAS. It all depends on your margin. Here you'll understand exactly when a campaign makes money and when it just looks like it works.
Calculate my ROAS nowThe most common mistake: thinking there is a universal ROAS
Many ecommerce stores believe a 2x, 3x or 4x ROAS is automatically good. But that is false.
ROAS only makes sense when you compare it with your gross margin. Without that context, the number says nothing about real profitability. If you want to verify it with your data, use the ROAS calculator.
How to know if your ROAS is enough
The formula is simple:
This is the exact point where you stop losing money. Anything below this number means the campaign has not recovered the investment.
Real examples by margin
| Gross margin | Minimum ROAS (break-even) | Good ROAS (+30% ROI) |
|---|---|---|
| 20% | 5x | 6.5x |
| 30% | 3.33x | 4.33x |
| 40% | 2.5x | 3.25x |
| 50% | 2x | 2.6x |
With low margins like 20%, you need a 5x ROAS just to break even. That's why comparing ROAS between ecommerce stores with different margins makes no sense. The "Good ROAS" column adds a 30% buffer above break-even to deliver a healthy ROI (≈+30%) after absorbing returns and operating costs.
Reported ROAS vs incremental ROAS
The ROAS shown by the platform is not the real ROAS. The incremental ROAS is the one that truly attributes to the campaign sales that would not have happened without it. In practice it is usually 20-40% below the reported ROAS, because platforms claim sales that would have come from SEO, brand, email or other channels anyway.
Always work with a 25% downward mental buffer on reported ROAS, or run incrementality tests pausing geos/audiences to measure the real lift.
